How To Build A Fence

Materials

25mm x 100mm pressure treated softwood
Wood glue
75mm and 40mm stainless steel screws
75mm x 75mm posts treated to Use Class 4
Steel post holders (optional)

Cutting the panels

Cut all your fence panels to the size required for the height of your fence (and enough for the length!).

Cutting a pattern

Decide what shape you want your panels. Draw out the shape on one panel. Cut out the first panel and use as a template for the rest. I’ve shown some examples here.

Making up the fence

Lay all the panels for a 1.8m length (this will make working easier) evenly spaced onto two lengths of horizontal braces (overlap these braces so that you can connect the next section to them), one at the top and one at the bottom. Ensure braces are level. Glue & screw into place.

Fixing the fence

To fix panels securely into the ground, use 75mm x 75mm pressure treated wooden posts 600mm higher than the fence. Fix the posts to the top and bottom horizontal braces at approx. 1800mm centres, predrilling and countersinking, with 75mm screws. Alternatively you could use steel post holders and shorter posts. Why not add some colour with a colour stain preservative?
