The Grenfell Tower disaster has raised questions about the fitness for purpose of building regulations and the materials used to clad buildings. Inevitably, the use of wood and wood based panels for external cladding will come in for scrutiny. Enquiries seeking reassurance about the performance of timber cladding in a fire have already been received by our office. In response, the WPA has published the attached ‘Timber Cladding and Fire – Key Facts and Information Sheet’ for use by members and their customers.
The current WPA Manual dealing with the flame retardant protection of wood and wood based panels contains useful guidance for customers on getting the FR materials specification right first time.
The information sheet published today is the first step in a WPA campaign to raise the profile of quality assured FR treatments for wood and FR panel products. More information about this will follow shortly.
